GRANTS FOR MEDICAL RESEARCH

The Sir Jules Thorn Charitable Trust

GRANT PROGRAMMES

The Trust operates two schemes, which are available by invitation only as described below:

The Sir Jules Thorn Award for Biomedical Research

Each year a number of medical schools in The Russell Group are invited to bid for an award of up to £1.25 million to fund a programme of translational research which is judged to be at the leading edge of international science. Full details of the criteria and the application procedure are sent to the Deans of the competing medical schools.

CALLS FOR SUBMISSIONS

The next competition will be for the 2009 Award. The following university medical schools have been invited to compete:-

Birmingham, Bristol, Cambridge, Cardiff, Edinburgh, Glasgow, Imperial College London, King’s College London, Leeds, and Liverpool.

Each institution will select its research proposal on a competitive basis. Any investigators who consider that they have a study which would fit the criteria, and would like to be considered, should contact the office of the Dean (or equivalent) of their institution for further details.

The Sir Jules Thorn PhD Scholarship Programme

This scheme offers funding to specific university medical schools for high quality postgraduate research training over a three year period, culminating in the award of a PhD.

The Programme is designed to provide support for a Senior Clinical Lecturer appointed during the preceding 5 years.

Three awards are available annually. Each award is for £25,000 per year for three years. Selected medical schools are invited to submit competitive bids for which detailed criteria are provided.

The Trust does not accept unsolicited applications for the aforementioned awards, and does not offer any other grant schemes for medical research.
